Doc. MgA. Mgr. Karel František Tománek introduced his program as a candidate for the position of Dean on Tuesday 1 December 2020 at a meeting of the DAMU Academia. That same day the DAMU Academic Senate made the decision to appoint Doc. Tománek Dean of the Theatre Faculty of AMU for the period of 2021-2025. He will consequently succeed the current Dean, Doubravka Svobodová, who has been working in this position for two terms of office since 2013, in March 2021.
Karel František Tománek has been working as a lecturer at the Department of Alternative and Puppet Theatre of DAMU since 2016. His lectures include Dramaturgy Creation, Production Creation and Literary Preparation. He successfully passed the habilitation procedure in 2015 and was appointed Associate Professor in the field of Dramatic Arts with a Focus on Dramaturgy of Alternative and Puppet Theatre. He is a member of the DAMU Arts Council and the professional committee of doctoral study programme called Alternative and Puppet Theatre and its Theory.
During his more than thirty years of professional work in the theatre, he has worked as a dramaturg, an author and a director at leading Czech theatre stages. He spent several years at Činoherní studio in Ústí nad Labem (1989-1993), at Městské divadlo in Brno (1994-1996), Klicperovo divadlo in Hradec Králové (1997-1999) and at Karlovarské městské divadlo (2001-2003). For eleven years of his career, he worked at Dejvické divadlo (2003-2014). During this period, he also worked for one season as the dramaturg of the Drama section of the National Theatre Prague. Since then he has returned to the Činoherní studio in Ústí nad Labem, where he has been engaged once again since 2016.
In the position of Dean of the Faculty, Karel František Tománek would like to apply the principles of mutual openness which have proven successful during his pedagogical practice. He remains convinced that a dialogue led in respect for others can result in much more effective, functional and creative results. He would like to avoid directives and hurried decisions based on insufficient background information. He is of the opinion that the main task of the Dean’s office is not only to provide new impulses but mainly to create good conditions for realization of the plans and visions which come from the lower organizational structures (mainly from the departments). He also further makes reference in his concept to the fact he views the four year term of office mainly as an opportunity to describe and analyse – based on collective work and internal institutional discussion – the essential facts and realities which influence the everyday operations of the school in a significant way. He views these topics as the Covid-19 pandemics situation, the institutional accreditation process, scholarly and research activities and the expansion of the study premises of the faculty.
The meeting of DAMU Academia took place under strict sanitary conditions in the DAMU building and was streamed live via Youtube as well. The members of the DAMU Academia, which includes lecturers and students of the Faculty, had a chance to ask questions via the Microsoft Teams platform.
